Details

AUGUST 10, 2005 ended an era at Southern Heritage Farm when SHF Southern Whiz was put down for organ failure at the age of 22. The era began on February 21, 1983, with the birth of the second foal by Gazesel+ (Gazon X Gesel) out of HV Baroness [Lea Barron by Azraff X HV Giddy Globbin by Comar Fleygaz (an Azraff Son)] named SHF Southern Whiz. Whiz's strength of pedigree was derived from his sire Gazesel+ who was by the leading living sire of broodmares, Gazon. Gazon by Ferzon produced such noted brood matrons as the dam of Huckleberry Bey and Fame VF+, as well as the double National Champion Stallion in English Pleasure and halter, Raffon. Gazesel+ himself was Region 8 Champion Stallion and Region 12 Reserve Champion Stallion. Whiz's dam, HV Baroness, was by the Azraff son Lea Barron, who was National Champion Futurity Stallion and out of HV Giddy Gobblin, an Azraff granddaughter. Thus Whiz was the result of the "Golden Cross", Ferzon cross-ed on Azraff, which the Gainey Farm and Garth Bucannan made so famous with such horses as Gai Campaigner, National Champion Stallion Whiz very early was nicknamed "The Exotic One" and began his show career at the Western Carolinas Futurity as a yearling, winning his first futurity class under Judge Peter Cameron, who was most recently inducted into the Judges Hall of Fame by AHA. He was the visual definition of Arabian type, as his pedigree would suggest. His presence and tail carriage were indisputable. He was gentle enough for a 12 year-old to feed without worrying about their safety, yet intimidating enough to send Ted Carson hunting the fence when he reared. . He was clever enough to know just when to sling and duck his head to slip his halter when Jim Fisher was leading him at a Southern Heritage Farm Open House. Truly an unforgettable character, when people saw him and they had an appreciation for the Arabian breed, they never forgot. He was an ambassador for the Arabian The Arabian Horse World used a picture of Whiz rearing to advertise their magazine renewal for several months. They also used a head shot by Stewart Vesty to introduce the section of the stallion issue in January and again in March another year. His picture was used most recently by the World in their calendar for the month of November. High points of his show career included being named Top 8 at the Ohio Buckeye Sweepstakes on May 23, 1985. The following year, as a three year old, he was high point Arabian Stallion for South Carolina and Champion Stallion at the South Carolina State Fair. Whiz was the first foal to bear the Southern Heritage Farm prefix SHF. He founded a dynasty. His most famous cross was with the mare Citona [GB Baron by Sun Bask X Overlook Felicity a Ferzon granddaughter].
