Cairn Terrier
The Cairn may be small, but he’s an active family member who wants to play and play. He is smart, if somewhat independent. The Cairn has a foxy expression and a tough, weather-resistant coat that can be any color but white.

The Brittany’s medium size, wash-and-go coat, and happy, intelligent personality make him the perfect dog for an owner who will give him the exercise he needs -- or, even better, take him hunting.
Boykin Spaniel
This medium-size sporting breed is a great retriever, loves water, and has a friendly nature. He’s not much of a watchdog, but if you’re looking for a pal to take hunting, boating, or hiking, he’s a great choice.
Border Terrier
The people-oriented Border Terrier is more laid-back than other terrier breeds. His size makes him portable, and he’s a great companion and watchdog for a moderately active family. Bonus: The Border Terrier is also very trainable.
Border Collie
Some people say the Border Collie is the smartest dog breed. His ability to impose his will on sheep makes him the best sheepherding dog in the world -- but watch out, because he'll try to impose his will on you, too.
Briard
Briard devotees describe him as “a heart wrapped in fur.” This French herding breed is large and protective; he’s an excellent watchdog and will guard his family and property just as carefully as he guarded his flocks.
