Black Shumen chicken is an old breed of chicken originating in Shumen region of Bulgaria. In the middle of the 20th century it was crossed with Minorca and Rhode Island red chickens. Nowadays it is considered to be a rare breed. It is kept by Bulgarian Poultry Institute in Stara Zagora and a few Bulgarian breeders members of Bulgarian Poultry Breeders.
